A digital coffee punch card: how to build one that brings customers back

The short answer

A digital coffee punch card is a punch card saved in the phone wallet, with no app. You choose how many visits lead to a reward and what the reward is. The staff member adds a visit from their own phone with one press, and after every visit the customer sees how many are left.

What a digital coffee punch card is

It is the same punch card you know from the counter, only on the phone. Instead of a cardboard card forgotten at home, the card is saved in Google Wallet on Android or Apple Wallet on iPhone.

There is no app to download. The customer scans, types a phone number and gets a code. From then on the card is with them, together with their credit card and boarding pass.

Shortip has three types of club: stamp card, prepaid package and recognition card. A cafe usually fits a stamp card: a punch card with a reward at the end.

How to choose the number of visits and the reward

Two questions decide the whole punch card: how many visits until the reward, and what the reward is. There is no one right number for every cafe. There is a number that fits the pace of your customers.

  1. Start from the regular customer. How many times a week do they come? Someone who comes every morning will reach the reward quickly, and that is perfectly fine.
  2. Choose a reward that costs you little and is worth a lot to the customer. A coffee, the morning pastry, an extra. Something already on the counter.
  3. Work out what the reward costs you, and divide by the number of visits. That way you see what each visit on the punch card really costs you.
  4. Do not stretch the road. A reward that is too far away feels like a promise that will not happen, and the customer stops counting.

Example: a neighborhood cafe in Haifa

For example, a fictional cafe called "Morning Corner". Most regular customers come before work, almost every day. This is how they built the punch card:

The every-morning customer

The regular customer is the reason to build a punch card. They do not need convincing to come. They need a small reason to choose you and not the kiosk next to the bus stop.

The card helps them see the road. Each customer has their own page: how many visits, what they got, when the next reward is. The card even tells them "at your pace, the reward is in about a week".

And in their birthday month, the card reminds them of the benefit you set. Without you having to remember dates.

The moment at the register

A punch card succeeds or fails in one moment: when there is a line. If recording takes time, staff will simply skip it. So everything is built around one press.

  • Each staff member uses their own phone: scans the card and presses the button.
  • The scan only identifies. The visit is recorded only when the staff member presses.
  • The customer forgot their phone? Find them by number.
  • Reception dropped? The visit is saved and sent when it comes back.
  • The customer has no reception? The staff member signs them up from the scanner.
  • One phone at the register? Each staff member picks their own name.
  • A visit recorded by mistake is cancelled with a reason, and you see who cancelled it.

There is also an NFC sticker. The staff member offers it, the customer brings their phone close, and the visit is recorded. A sticker stamps a card once a day.

And what about someone who still holds a paper punch card? They do not start from zero. You move their visits to the digital card, with your approval.

The line that appears after every visit

After every visit the wallet card updates, and a short line appears on the lock screen. For example: "Visit added. 2 more visits to your reward: coffee".

This line is the heart of the punch card. The customer opens nothing and searches for nothing, and knows exactly where they stand. On the way out of the cafe, the next reward is already on their mind.

And when you close for a day, "Closed today" reaches the wallet card. You can send a message like this once a day.

What you learn about your customers

A paper punch card walks out the door and never comes back to you. A digital card leaves you a picture of who comes, when, and who stopped.

One more important thing: your customer list, as a file, at any moment. It is yours, not the tool's.

Three mistakes to know in advance

  • A reward nobody wants. A coffee everyone orders is better than an expensive product nobody asked for. The customer should want the reward from the first visit.
  • Staff who do not know why it exists. If the team sees the punch card as one more task, they will forget to ask. Five minutes of explanation at the start of a shift make the difference.
  • Changes every week. A customer who built a habit around nine visits does not want to suddenly find out it is now twelve. Choose, give it a month, and only then check.

How to start

First decide on the number of visits and the reward. Then set the design: your business's colors, logo and stamp. Then print the sign for the register, and you also get a ready image to post.

On the first day, the important sentence is the staff member's: "We have a punch card on your phone, want to join?". The customer scans the sign, types a phone number, and the card is already in their wallet. Each staff member gets an invitation on WhatsApp and installs the scanner, and you add visits from your own phone too.

After a week, take a look at the list: who joined, which staff member signed up the most, and what happened at the register. That way you see quickly whether the sentence is really said to every customer, or only when someone remembers.

Frequently asked questions

Do customers need to download an app to use a digital coffee punch card?

No. The customer scans, types a phone number and gets a code, and the card is saved in the phone wallet, on Android and on iPhone.

Can I have one punch card for coffee and one for pastry?

Yes. Two punch cards, for example coffee and pastry, on one card in the wallet.

Can the customer add a visit on their own?

No. The staff member adds the visit, from their own phone or with the NFC sticker they offer. The scan only identifies, and the visit is recorded only when the staff member presses.

What happens when a customer changes phones?

The card is restored with a code, and the visits stay.
